Marketing Blogs: The Big List

Posted by: of ExecutiveSummary.com on 11/30/04

My new favorite sport is antagonizing direct marketing guru (read "dinosaur"; JUST KIDDING!) Bob Bly, who suggests in his latest blog post that there are only a couple of dozen marketing blogs out there. I know there are a heck of a lot more out there than that, but I’m too busy/lazy to spend a couple of hours compiling a huge list of them.

So it occurred to me that maybe you’d all help me with the work. Please list your blog in the comments field if (and only if) it’s a marketing-oriented blog (I’ll delete submissions I deem off-topic). Feel free to add others you know of. (<a href> tags are allowed in comments.) And spread the word; if successful, this post can serve as a resource to those looking for such blogs. If enough participate, I’ll update this post with the list so it’s easier to scan.

Otherwise, I’ll just look like a dope if only four of you bother… <gulp>

UPDATE:

The response to this challenge wasn’t quite as overwhelming as I’d hoped, so like usual, if you want something done right, you have to do it yourself. Therefore, I spent the last hour surfing marketing blogs, and let me tell you something, there are a lot more than a couple dozen marketing blogs out there. Suffice it to say this is just the tip of the ice berg, but one that I’ll update from time to time (it’s a TypeList, so that’s easy).

  1. Bly makes some good points. I think there are more ‘marketing’ blogs out there than you’d know as some are what I’d term ‘stealth personal’. They are personal blogs but also have the added advantage of being associated with your company. This applies from VC blogs to CEO blogs.

As far as freelancers and solo practitioners, yes, that’s a huge problem with the billable hour business model not a problem of blogging per se. I find blogging is a great way to build a dialogue and discover new markets and products (even productized services ala IBM) with ‘trend translators.’

Mine is a marketing blog and I even talk about marketing and innovation within it, Crossroads Dispatches.

  11. There may be more than a couple dozen marketing-related blogs out there (mine included), but not nearly as many as there should be, given the awesome power and unlimited potential of this self-publishing platform. I am very happy to see Bob Bly enter the blogosphere. His blog should attract a throng of readers, many of whom will be traditional, offline communications professionals. He should help push blogging across the threshold and that much closer to the tipping point.

And Bob has asked me to participate in his little teleconference about business blogging seeming you so kindly declined his offer!

  26. The marketing blog that ranks #1 on Google, #2 on Yahoo and #1 on MSN is Online Marketing Blog. Interesting you would leave it out of your list and link to a query on “marketing blogs”.

Bly’s comments are not a realistic comparison. Blogging as a marketing activity is more about branding for most blogs and that involves a different set of metrics than what’s involved with evaluating a direct mail campaign.

Why he decided to compare blogs to direct marketing tactics makes little sense at all – at least not yet. Except to stir up the bees nest maybe.

  28. Hello Rick. I read Bob Bly’s comments about you. His polar opposite? That was uncalled for. The truth is, in that comment, Bob did make some decent, although kind of obvious, statements, but he seems to fall short of possessing a solid understanding of the potential of blogs as one component of an integrated marketing strategy. As for your response, I think your comments on his blog were dead on. (For the record, I’ve been involved in marketing management, ebusiness strategy, direct mail and print advertising during he last 20 years, so I am certainly not “e” or channel centric either or part of the under 30 crowd Bob mentioned.) Still, Bob is one of the greats of copywriting and he deserves respect for his impressive body of work.

I publish Marketing Today, a webzine on business-to-business marketing, email newsletter and recently launched a Marketing Today blog at http://marketingtoday.blogspot.com/. I’d be happy to be included in your list. The webzine is at http://www.marketingtoday.com.

  35. Even I’m suprised by that comment and I just started blogging. Actually I started because I heard it was another good marketing technique and I’ve definitely seen a lot of other marketing blogs out there. It may be a personal blog too, but thats to let my customers get to know me as a real person. I make beaded jewelry and often do custom work, especially for weddings, so I think a place like a weblog helps ease the customers mind of dealing with some stranger over the internet and allows them to get to know this person they need to trust with their $$ and time.
