Drupal is an amazing system which will continue to grow in popularity as the needs of users grow. We are using Drupal for our web design systems as an easy way to upgrade a client's web site with added features. The template system provide a superb way for a company like ours to provide our clients with a varied selection of choices and to get an idea of what they want at the outset.

Drupal's code is also a very well written meaning that very little needs to be done on our end to come up with a suitable end product for our clients.

Other systems may fit better for users who have minimal requirements but their needs will surely grow and then they will be suck with the task of migrating to Drupal.

We are glad to have picked Drupal as learning a system with such extendibility keeps our time to launch down and that means we can afford to charge our clients less.

what do you think of the fact that blogs spread copyrighted material via file share sites?

Example: I found a copy of Drupal Creating Blogs, Forums, Portals, and Community Websites on files.ww.com

Is there a plugin to accomodate multi-lingual sites.

I need to develop a system that can run in Spanish & English. The same content, just displayed in differnet languages.

I've switched from Drupal to Mambo. Drupal is an excellent blogger, but not in tune the the needs of the masses. Drupal is certainly an up and coming platform for various types of content. But not what I consider a CMS.

It's great that Drupal is growing. I wish the dev's@drupal would start listening to what is needed by those who write about what they need in a CMS. Multipage content in Drupal is no less than a nightmare. That is the reason I must scroll for miles to reach this comment form. Try turning a page in drupal. The only way it's possible is with the book module.

I often see references to Drupal, Mambo, Typo3, and all the other likely suspects. Theys eem tiohave their followings. Fair enough, but I am nearly completing an evaluation of several CMS's. The best one I have seen, in terms of flexibility, modularity, etc., is:

Xaraya.

Comments?

decent review. thanks.

i have been using drupal for about a month to test and compare to my previous experience with typo3 (amazing, yet slow). i like drupal. it is fast, logical and functionality is very extensible. The templating platform seems to be going through an overhaul, thank god. It's not that the templating system is horrible but it is not too logical and overly complicated. It would have been better to just adopt the smarty template engine or similar addon (which can be done on a per template basis). Just reading about the templating discussions can give you a headache but i look forward to a steamlined approach.

You can in fact export to PDF: http://drupal.org/project/pdfview

The book module has the much more useful "view as printer friendly" mode, which strips all extraneous graphics and allows easy printing.

Unfortunately drupal has no pdf-export feature, what makes it uninteresting for most business sites. Also I do not understand why there is a "collaborative book" feature, if you can not export this book to a pdf file. Also writing a book is much more wiki like and everybody, who is interested in something like this should take a look at http://doc-book.sf.net
The advertised book-feature was the main reason for me to test drupal. I was disappointed, that the term "book" was used in such a misleading way.

Also, of course very important for a professional site, the integration af any shopping system is very poor in drupal.

to the siteowner: talking about "CMS" without ever mentioning at least (the slow) TYPO3 or (the really cool) ezpublish is like a virgin talking about good sex...

Lurker
(still not an expert but wondering about the fact, that most people calling themselves "experts" do not even know the basics)

If you - after reading this - feel like more, then you MUST read Boris Manns long reply linked above (<a href="http://www.bryght.com/node/view/86" rel="nofollow">http://www.bryght.com/node/view/86</a>). One "feature" which is apparently hard to understand is the taxonomy system in Drupal. This system is NOT anything like MT. It is a REAL professional system. Read Boris' explanation.
I also need to add that Drupal is excellent in portal setups - intranet or otherwise. It is excellent as a community system. In fact Drupal is NOT first a CMS and secondly a blogging system. Drupal is first a Community System - and very few (if any) systems are better than Drupal in that respect. And you can include ANY commercial product here. I work professionally with Microsoft Sharepoint Server systems. They are cool, but I like Drupal better.
